12th and 16th Hitchin joined forces for a fantastic week away at Leeswood camp site in Watford. With a Back 2 Basics Adventure theme, 17 scouts had a great week with some excellent activities. Everyone took part in Climbing, Rifle Shooting and Archery. There was a 10 mile day hike along the Grand Union Canal and back through some more rural landscape.
To cap off the week a definite highlight was the day out at Chessington World of Adventures where rides ranged from the more heart racing Dragons Fury to the slow and easily paced Professor Burp's Bubbleworks. The writer of this blog much preferred the Pirate ship, unlike one of our slightly braver member of the leadership team who would have hit me if he wasn't holding on so tight!
Even at the days spent at camp, there were important Scout activities with plenty of action. Camp ovens were built, in which Pizza and Apple Crumble was cooked. Wide games were played, campfires lit, camp gadgets built and wood piles topped up. In general the scouts did all the work themselves, cooking their own food on fires they kept going themselves.
A volleyball court was built to provide some fun and games during free time and throughout the week everyone earned a badge or more. The Adventure badge was won by all with the Outdoor badge also being earned by those that didn't already have it. Everyone added to their nights away and hikes away and a few people also completed their Expedition badge. A select few also managed to finish their Chief Scout Gold Award, the highest accolade that can be won as a Scout.
Thanks again to all the leaders and to the parents who helped to ferry equipment and food to and from the site. It was a wonderful week and thanks also to the Scouts who turned up, without you there was no week! Well done and cheers. Heres to 2010!!
